A gold 1970 FIFA World Cup winner's medal presented to Pelé for being part of the 1970 World Cup champion Brazil national football team. The 1970 FIFA World Cup was the ninth staging of the FIFA World Cup and was held from May 31 to June 21, 1970, in Mexico. The 1970 Brazil national football team is widely regarded as one of the, if not the, greatest football teams ever assembled. Pelé would score the opening goal in the 18th minute of the World Cup final versus Italy, which was held in the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, leading the way to Brazil's 4-1 victory and to the country's third World Cup title. In winning the 1970 World Cup, Pelé became the only football player in history to win the World Cup three times, and he was awarded the Golden Ball as player of the tournament. The gold medal features maker's stamp "Peka" in the front top right corner. The front of the medal features an engraving of a winged figure representing Nike, the ancient Greek goddess of victory, below the letters "F.I.F.A.," the acronym for "Fédération Internationale de Football Association" [International Federation of Association Football]. The back of the medal features the words "Campeonato Mundial De Futbol/ Copa Jules Rimet/ Mexico/ 1970" [World Football Championship/ Jules Rimet Cup/ Mexico/ 1970] surrounding a low-relief laurel wreath.
