A heavily worn white Athleta brand Santos FC football jersey owned by Pelé. The jersey features a Santos FC crest stitched over the left breast and the number “1040” stitched on the back. The jersey was a promotional item created in conjunction with the inaugural games played at Estádio Olímpico Colosso da Lagoa [Colossus Lagoon Olympic Stadium] in Erechim, Brazil, on September 2, 1970. The inaugural game would have Pelé's Santos FC team defeating Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense (Grêmio) in a friendly match 2-0 to win the "Troféu Colosso da Lagoa." Pelé scored a goal in the match, the 1,040th goal of his career. The number 1040 was significant in that it was the station frequency number used by Rádio Tupi to broadcast the game. In conjunction with the inaugural match and in anticipation of Pelé’s 1,040th goal, the station produced and wore promotional Santos shirts emblazoned on the back with the number 1040. No size present. “This jersey is very important. There is a radio station in São Paulo that broadcasts on AM frequency 1040 kHz. When I scored my 1,040th goal, they embroidered 1,040 on a jersey and gave it to me. The only athlete ever celebrated with jersey number 1,040 by this radio station was me. There is no other jersey in the world like this one as that famous 1040AM radio station celebrated my 1,040th goal. This jersey is important to me.” - Pelé $3000-5000 £2100-3500 Categories: PELÉ
