A medal award presented to Pelé by the Republic of Panama's Order of Vasco Nunez de Balboa. This national award, established in 1933, is given to distinguished Panamanians and international figures in the sciences, arts and letters. The award features a purple and gold sash attached to a cross of white enamel surrounded by a laurel-like circle of painted metal. In the center of the enamel cross is a circle of white enamel with a gold tone image of Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa, best known for having crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean in 1513.
