Affixed to the base is a metal plaque with the dedication "Presented to/ 'PELÉ'/ July 14, 1968/ For his outstanding contribution/ to soccer throughout the world/ Washington Whips Soccer Club/ Washington, D.C./ U.S.A." Pelé and his Santos FC teammates won the match by a score of 3-1. The Washington Whips played in the United Soccer Association. The league was made up of teams imported from foreign leagues.
