A gold 1962 FIFA World Cup winner's medal presented to Pelé for being part of the 1962 World Cup champion Brazil national football team. The 1962 FIFA World Cup was the seventh staging of the FIFA World Cup and was held from May 30 to June 17, 1962, in Chile. Heading into the 1962 World Cup, Pelé was rated as the best player in the world. He started the tournament very well, scoring a goal in the 73rd minute of Brazil's opening match against Mexico at the Estadio Sausalito in Viña del Mar, Chile. However, Pelé would not fair so well in the second match of the tournament, where he suffered an injury in Brazil's match against Czechoslovakia. Brazil would go on to win the 1962 FIFA World Cup, thus defending its 1958 World Cup title and becoming the second country to win back-to-back championships after Italy accomplished the feat with its 1938 World Cup win. The gold medal features maker's stamp "Peka" in the front top right corner. The front of the medal features an engraving of a winged figure representing Nike, the ancient Greek goddess of victory, below the letters "F.I.F.A.," the acronym for "Fédération Internationale de Football Association" [International Federation of Association Football]. The back of the medal features the words "Campeonato Mundial De Futbol/ Copa Jules Rimet/ Chile/ 1962" [World Football Championship/ Jules Rimet Cup/ Chile/ 1962] surrounding a low-relief laurel wreath.
