A white leather Copa Rio - Drible Especial brand football used by Pelé to score his 1,000th career goal, which he did in a match that pitted his Santos FC team against rival Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama, known as Vasco da Gama. The game took place on November 19, 1969, at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The game was part of the Roberto Gomes Pedrosa Tournament, which was a precursor to the Campeonato Brasileiro. The match was tied 1-1 with 12:00 minutes remaining when a penalty was called, allowing Pelé to line up for a penalty kick. Vasco da Gama's goaltender at that time, Edgardo Andrada, has been quoted as saying about the moment, "The noise was deafening. Even the Vasco supporters were against me." Knowing that he had an opportunity to score his 1,000th goal, Pelé has been quoted as saying about the kick, "For the first time in my career, I felt really nervous." At 11:11 p.m. on November 19, 1969, in front of more than 65,000 in attendance at the Maracanã, Pelé scored his 1,000th career goal. After scoring the goal, Pelé raced into the back of the net to retrieve the ball. He was then surrounded by reporters and fans on the field. The game took roughly 25 minutes to resume after the goal, and Pelé requested to keep the ball.
