The FIFA Player of the Century was a one-off award created by FIFA to decide the greatest football player of the 20th century. Diego Maradona and Pelé were joint winners of the award. Maradona won the award based on an internet poll, and Pelé won the award based on votes from FIFA officials, journalists and coaches. The silver tone metal award features a football sculpture mounted in the center. Engraved into the base of the award are the words "Pelé/ FIFA Player of the Century." Engraved into the bottom of the award is the name of the designer of the award "Conception Atelier [Studio] Roger Pfund Carouge/ Switzerland."
