A two-piece custom made polished cotton sateen costume designed by Diana Moseley and worn by David Bowie on his 1987 Glass Spider tour. The tour combined theatrical elements with rock show performances and greatly influenced a variety of artists to incorporate theatrical elements into music tours. At the time of the tour, it was criticized as being overly extravagant, but by the 2000s, it was gaining accolades, and in 2010, it was noted as being one of the top concert designs of all time. The "Urban Space Cowboy" costume consists of a shirt with a band collar, flipped shoulder tabs with a dance strap attached to the interior, and a pair of utilitarian trousers with built-in chaps and a belt. A Karl Marx patch has been added to the verso of the shirt and is believed to have come from a collection of items Bowie acquired in Russia. Both pieces are embellished with top stitching details and handpainting. The interior of the shirt is signed "Best Wishes, Bowie 1987." The design inspirations for the costume were a pilot flight suit, which was a nod to a spaceman, with incorporated cowboy chaps. Moseley noted that there were two sets of this costume made for Bowie. Bowie wore a James Dean style drizzler jacket, cowboy boots, and an abseiling, used for flying tricks, with this ensemble. Bowie wears the alternate shirt with the trousers in the image. Accompanied by a tour program with hospitality pass, a copy of Glass Spider (AAV Australia, 1988), a letter of authenticity from G Read more…
