“Diogenes Searching for an Honest Man” Sebast(ian) Brössler, Prag, No. 352. Made in Bohemia, circa 1740. Very fine, half quarter-repeating, 22K gold, repoussé paircased pocket watch. To be sold without reserve Outer: Two-body, repousse, the bezel pierced and chased with scrollwork, the back engraved with a scene depicting a camp, Diogenes and his lantern on the foreground, the cap of Diogenes is engraved "O Teon Mchel" (sic). Inner: Two-body, "bassine", the back chased with a battle scene, probably of Prague with the St. Mary of Tyn church in the background, the pierced border chased and engraved with soldiers on horseback. White enamel with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track and Arabic five minute numerals. Blued steel "beetle and poker" hands. Hinged gilt brass full plate with square baluster pillars, fusee with chain, verge escapement, plain brass three-arm balance, flat balance spring, gilt brass cock pierced and engraved with a mask and scrolling foliage, repeating on a bell activated by depressing the pendant. Movement signed. Diam. 47 mm. Notes Diogenes Searching for an Honest Man This particular depiction of the scene was popular in 17th Century Netherlandish painting. The lamp is a symbol of truth or virtue.
