HANHART CHRONOGRAPH NICKEL AND SILVER Hanhart, Germany, movement No. 2876. Made circa 1943. Fine, water-resistant, nickel-silver military wristwatch with retour en vol round button chronograph and register. Three-body, polished, sand-finish, stainless steel screwed caseback. Black with luminous Arabic numerals, subisidiary seconds and 30 minutes register dials. "Skeleton" radium- coated hands. Cal. 41, 15"', rhodium plated, 17 jewels, lever escapement, monometallic balance, shock-absorber, self- compensating Breguet balance-spring. Notes Signed on the dial, numbered on the case. DIAM. 41 mm. According to the Hanhart website here is the story behind the famous red-button: "He placed a kiss lovingly on her brow as she slept before quietly leaving the apartment. As he looked at his Hanhart watch in the hangar, a smile flitted over his lips: she had painted the button with her red nail varnish so that he would think of her always and return safe and sound ... This is the legend behind the red button - the distinctive trademark that has characterized Hanhart since the company first introduced its chronographs in 1938. The button has been painted, in particular to prevent pilots from unintentionally zeroing the stop time."
