James Cox, London, No. 147, London hallmarks for 1771. Fine and very rare 22K gold pair-cased pocket watch with Graham’s cylinder escapement. Outer: two-body, by Peter Mounier (PM), polished. Inner: two-body, by Peter Mounier (PM), polished. White enamel, slightly convex, Roman numerals, outer minute ring with Arabic five-minute numerals, mounted to the hinged giltbrass dial plate. Gold "beetle and poker" hands. 39.8 mm with gilt brass dust cover, gilt brass full plate, square baluster pillars, fuseeand chain, cylinder escapement with large brass escape wheel, plain, three-arm steel balance with overbanking protection pin in therim and with jeweled staff, blued steel flat balance spring, English type cock pierced and engraved with asymmetrical foliage and a Ho-Ho bird, large diamond endstone.Signed on the movement and dust-cap, reversed of the cock stamped “I_R”, case stamped “PM” for Peter Mounier.Diam. 53 mm. Notes This watch is virtually identical with the cylinder watches made by George Graham from before 1730. The solid engraved cock foot and the large diamond endstone are also distinctive Graham features. It is probable that Cox “copied” an earlier watch by Graham. This is a rare example of a watch by Cox for the English market. James Cox (circa 1723 - 1800). Born in London around 1723, he became Free in 1745, at which time he was described as a goldsmith.
