"Sub Sole Sub Umbra Virens" Cartier, Paris, No. 7539. Made circa 1920. Very fine, thin and small, platinum keyless dress watch. Three-body, polished, wide bezel,coin-edge bezel, the back decorated withthe motto "Sub Sole Sub Umbra Virens"and a crest in blue enamel. Frosted silverwith radial Roman numerals andouter minute track. Blued steel Breguethands. Notes The motto 'SUB SOLE SUB UMBRA VIRENS' translated literally from the Latin means 'Under sun under shade be vigorous'. More usually translated as ''Flourishing in both sunshine and shade". This is the family motto of the Clan Irvine.
