Ref. 6085 “Stainless Steel Super Oyster Crown” Rolex, “Oyster Perpetual, Officially Certified Chronometer”, Ref. 6085. Case No. 723634. Made in 1950. Fine, tonneau-shaped, center seconds, self-winding, water-resistant, stainless steel gentleman's wristwatch with flinqué honeycomb dial. Two-body, polished and brushed, screweddown case back and “Super Oyster” crown, engine-turned bezel with hour divisions. Silver flinqué honeycomb with applied gold dart indexes and luminous yellow gold triangular quarters, luminous dots, outer minute/seconds divisions. Luminous yellow gold "Dauphine" hands. Cal. A.260, 9 3/4’’’, rhodium-plated, 18 jewels, straight line lever escapement, Superbalance, shock-absorber, self-compensating Breguet balance-spring. Dial, case, and movement signed. Diam. 34 mm. Thickness 13.5 mm. Notes The silvered honeycomb dial with applied indexes is an excellent example of the highest quality of a 1950s dial. The “Super-Oyster” winding crown was an attempt by Rolex to create a waterproof winding crown which did not need to be screwed down. The system itself worked, however in time the rubber seal perished and this crown type was phased out after only a few years of production. This watch is illustrated in “Rolex, Collecting Wristwatches”, by Osvaldo Patrizzi, 2001 Edition, p. 181.
