“Castel Sant’ Angelo, Roma” Vacheron et Constantin, Genève, No. 46118. Made in 1844. Very fine and thin lady’s 18K gold pendant watch, engraved in taille douce. Four-body, “bassine et filet”, florally chased bezels, pendant and bow, coin-edge band, the back engraved in taille douce with a view of Castel Sant’ Angelo, Rome, the interior of the back with engraved dedication. Hinged gold cuvette. White enamel with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track, secured by two screws from the front. Gold “Breguet” hands. 31 mm., frosted gilt, bar caliber, cylinder escapement, three-arm brass balance, flat blued steel balance spring, index regulator. Dial, case and movement signed. Diam. 36 mm. Notes This is a typical example of a watch made for the Italian market, where Vacheron & Constantin were well established. Another very similar watch, made in 1837, engraved with a view of St. Peter’s Square, Rome, was sold by Antiquorum, “The Quarter Millennium of Vacheron Constantin”, April 3, 2005, Lot 159.
