"Master Alarm Mechanism" Bardon, French. Made circa 1920. Fine, gilt brass, marble and glass, wall-mounted "master" electric automatic alarm system adjustable for setting for any time period and using mercury contact switches. Square, white and grey-veined marble backboard, electrical contacts, gilt brass frame with beveled glazing. Circular brass with three mercury contact switches mounted on the periphery, large minute ring with numbered holes to accept the setting pins, inner discs for setting the hour and five minute intervals. Signature plaque on the backboard. Dim. 36 x 36 x 17 cm. Property of a French Gentleman Notes This mechanism was made for use in industrial or institutional situations where bells needed to be sounded throughout a building at a set time, such as in factories or schools. The system uses holes and pegs to set the required alarm time intervals, when a lever hits the passing peg it tilts the mercury contact switch and triggers the alarm.
