"Chronometer" Jules Jürgensen, Copenhagen, No. 11103. Made circa 1870. Very fine, hunting-cased, keyless, 18K yellow gold pocket chronometer with pivoted detent escapement and Jürgensen's patented winding and handsetting mechanism. Four-body, "bassine et filets", entirely engine-turned, hinged gold cuvette. White enamel with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track, large subsidiary seconds dial. Blued steel Breguet hands. Cal. 19’’’, maillechort, 18 jewels, Earnshaw-type chronometer escapement with pivoted detent, gold escape wheel, the detent pivot and escape wheel pivot with gold caps, cut bimetallic compensation balance with gold timing screws, blued steel Breguet balance spring, steel post to prevent excessive amplitudes, index regulator, wolf’s tooth winding wheels. Dial, case and movement signed. Diam. 51 mm. Property of an East Coast Collector Notes Jules Frédéric Jürgensen (1808-1877) The son of Urban Jürgensen, Jules was born in Le Locle, but as a child moved with his parents to Denmark. In 1830, after the death of his father, the company was taken over by Jules and his brother Louis Urban. In 1833 Jules returned to Le Locle and built up a great business, which was continued by his brother and in 1886 was sold to one of the employees, H. Kiens. Jürgensen was considered to be one of the best watchmakers working in Switzerland. He stamped most of his watches on the pillar plate under the dial: Jules Jürgensen of Copenhagen.
