“Sub-Miniature Striking & Repeating Carriage Clock” Swiss, No. 850. Made circa 1900. Fine and rare, sub-miniature, gilt brass, 8-day going, hour and half-hour striking, repeating carriage clock with striking barrel in the base. Accompanied by a fitted case. Gilt brass, "Corniche", foliate engraved friezes, engraved fluted pillars with leaf bases, glazed sides and back door, the top glazed to view the escapement, curved and engraved hinged carrying handle, winding aperture in the base for the striking and engraved “Sonnerie”. White enamel with Breguet numerals, outer minute track, matte silvered dial mask. Blued steel "spade" hands. Rectangular, frosted gilt brass, four pillars, barrels for the going and striking trains, the striking barrel mounted horizontally in the base and geared via a rod to the striking mechanism, lateral lever escapement mounted on a frosted silvered platform, notched bimetallic compensation balance, Breguet balance spring, index regulator, striking the hours and half hours on an oval blued steel gong, repeating activated by depressing a button at the top. Movement numbered. Dim. 66 x 39 x 43 mm. Notes Carriage clocks with hour and half-hour striking of this small size are very rare. It is possible for the clock to be 8-day going and striking and this small size because the barrel for the striking is contained within the base and geared via a steel pinion and wheel to the striking work within the plates. This allows the space between the plate
