“Swiss Giant Carriage Clock” J. Picard à Genève. Made circa 1850. Fine and rare, gilt brass “giant” grande and petite sonnerie striking, 8-day going, carriage clock with alarm. Cast throughout with stylized leaves, guilloché and egg and dart molding, hinged doors, sides and top with beveled glass, carrying handle designed as two intertwined snakes issuing from foliage. White enamel, rectangular, radial Roman numerals, outer minute track with dot five-minute indexes, alarm setting dial below with Arabic numerals. Blued steel “Breguet” hands. Rectangular, gilt brass, going barrels for the going and striking trains, silvered platform with lateral lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, Breguet balance spring, index regulator, striking with two hammers on two underslung bells in the base, alarm train with separate barrel and sounding with a further hammer, strikework on the backplate in the Swiss manner, grande/petite sonnerie/silence selection on the backplate (lever missing). Dial and movement signed. Dim. 18.5 x 14.5 x 10.5 cm. Excluding handle.
