J. Prevost a Paris. Made circa 1740. Fine, small, 8-day going, hour and halfhour striking, brass inlaid veneered Louis XV Boulle bracket clock. Waisted case with oak carcass, glazed on three sides and veneered with gilt brass inlaid tortoiseshell foliate marquetry, gilt bronze foliate feet, gilt metal framed glazed door with center bottom applique of a phoenix flanked by foliate and flower decoration, matching pediment surmounted by the figure of a seated cherub holding a spear and seated on a rockwork base. Gilt bronze with blue Roman numerals on white enamel cartouches, outer Arabic minute ring with individual Arabic numerals, white enamel center disc, signature plaque below the dial within a foliate cartouche. Blued steel “Louis XIV” hands. Rectangular with four turned baluster pillars, spring barrels for the going and striking trains, anchor escapement, brass bob pendulum, striking on a bell with outside numbered countwheel. Dial and movement signed. Dim. 63 x 30 x 15 cm. Notes Prevost A dynasty of watchmakers starting in 1565. The maker of the present clock is probably Bon-Jean Prevost who is recorded as working in the rue St. Honoré in 1747-8 and in the rue St. Germain l’Auxerrois by 1772.
