In designing it, Omega sought to create a robust, accurate and easy-to-read chronograph wristwatch. Waterproof to 60 meters, with a shock-resistant and anti-magnetic movement, it quickly gained a reputation among sportsmen. Pierre Moinat, then head of product development at Omega, conceived of a sports chronograph with tachymetric scale, whose highly legible indications were inspired by those of Italian sports cars of the time. The most brilliant feature was the placement of the timing scale on the bezel itself, thereby making the dial more legible. This idea was later copied by the majority of watch manufacture
