Gold & Plique à Jour Enamel Flowers Swiss. Made circa 1890. Very fine and rare, rococo Louis XV-style, 18K gold and plique à jour enamel lady’s keyless pendant watch with matching gold and plique à jour brooch. Four-body, "Louis XV", polished band, the bezel chased with asymmetric scrolls, the back chased with asymmetric foliate scrolls and flowers, the center with a plique à jour flower. Hinged gold cuvette. White enamel, radial Roman numerals, outer dot minute divisions and large radial Arabic five-minuet numerals. Gilt Louis XV hands. Notes The use of plique à jour enamel is very unusual in a watch. The technique gives the effect of stained glass when held against the light. This is achieved by the cutting out of the design in the gold, then the design is filled with enamel forming a “window” of suspended enamel. The technique is difficult and requires that the artisan be highly skilled.
