Skeletonized Watch & Chatelaine French. Made circa 1770. Very fine and very rare, 18K gold, paste-set skeletonized pendant watch with varicolored 18K gold chatelaine, key and seal. Accompanied by a box embossed with the initials GB beneath a Vicomte's coronet. Two-body, Louis XV, glazed on both sides, paste-set bezels, band engraved in repeated pattern, the top of the pendant engraved with initials. Chatelaine: Four chain strands linking two varicolored gold panels pierced and chased with trophies, chains for the watch, the key and the seal. White enamel, radial Roman numerals, outer minute divisions with large five-minute Arabic numerals. Paste-set hands. Hinged, gilt skeletonized plate with chased and engraved scroll and flower decoration, fusee and chain, verge escapement, brass balance with three swirled arms, flat balance spring, triangular single-footed solid engraved cock, index regulator. Diam. 36 mm Notes This type of skeletonized watch is associated with the French maker Jean-Antoine Lepine (1720-1814). The dial of the present watch features large Arabic five-minute numerals, Lepine was the first maker to adopt this style of dial which was his own design.
