ROLEX REF. 6536 SUBMARINER “RED 100 / 330” GILT TROPICAL DIAL Rolex, Oyster Perpetual, "Submariner, 100m/ 330ft", case No. 89383, Ref. 6536/6538. Made circa 1958. Fine and very rare, center seconds, self-winding, water-resistant, stainless steel diver's wristwatch. Three-body, polished and brushed, screwed-down case back and crown, graduated bi-directional revolving black bezel for the decompression times. Black with luminous baton, triangular and round indexes. Luminous steel skeleton hands. Cal. 1030, rhodium-plated, 25 jewels, straight-line lever escapement, monometallic balance adjusted to temperatures and 5 positions, shock absorber, self-compensating Breguet balance spring. Dial, case and movement signed. Diam. 37 mm. Thickness 13 mm. Notes The Rolex Reference 6536 was launched circa 1955 and is considered to be one of the earliest Submariner references (along with the Big Crown references 6200,6538, and the small crown 6204). Produced for approximately 5 years, its movement was powered by Caliber 1030, which was also available as a Certifi ed Chronometer movement cased as Reference 6536-1. Several variations of the dial were available in the Submariner's early production years. The earliest ones were without the depth rating (see lot 174, Rolex Revolution sale 17-04-2008) and the depth rating written in red was produced subsequently for a very short period as seen in this current example, confi rmed by its low serial number (#89383).
