POITEVIN DOUBLE-DIALED CALENDAR WATCH WITH GRAVITATIONAL COVER LOCKING B. Poitevin, (Paris), No. 39663. Made circa 1890. Very fine and rare, large, 18K pink gold hunting-cased, double-dialed pocket watch with calendar, gravitational cover locking and special dial. Three-body, bassine, engine-turned, the spring -loaded covers with special gravitational locking device, the front cover with an engraved and black enamel decorated monogram. White enamel on the front with radial letters replacing the numerals spelling the name “Jose Heguilor”, outer minute track and fi ve-minute Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds. Gold Louis XVI hands. White annular enamel on the rear with black Arabic chapter on the border for the date and inner days of the week. 44.7 mm. (20’’’), nickel, 18 jewels, wolf’s tooth winding, counterpoised straight line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance with gold screws, alloy Breguet balance spring, index regulator. Bezel signed. Diam. 55 mm. Notes This watch is of much higher quality than the majority of this model, it is made by Poitevin to the well-known design by B. Haas. The watch has a “mystery” opening feature: only one cover can be opened at a time, due to a special gravitational device that allows only the top cover to be opened. Thus, when the watch is turned, the cover that had remained closed no matter how much the pushbutton was depressed, suddenly “mysteriously” opens
