Notes Navigational Stopwatches The navigational stopwatch was used in conjunction with the aircraft’s octant, an instrument similar to a ship’s sextant used to measure the angular elevation of a celestial body with respect to the horizontal plane when the navigator was making observations in order to determine the aircraft’s position. In an airplane, particularly at sea, quite often that which appears to be the horizon is not a true horizon but a false horizon due to the atmospheric conditions, such as strata of haze or clouds.
