Swiss, case No. 4457567, retailed by Meridiano Club, Figueiredo & Co., Rio de Janeiro. Made circa 1908. Very fine and rare, large and heavy, 18K yellow gold, keyless pocket watch with cast medallion of King Carlos I and Prince Royal Luis Filipe of Portugal by Huguenin, to commemorate their regicide on 1st February, 1908. Four-body, matte, the bezel cast with the motto “Pela Lusitania Gloriosa”, foliate cast band, pendant and bow, the back cover set with a cast relief medallion of the three-quarter profiles of King Carlos I and Luis Filipe, around the border “S.M. Notes On 1 February 1908 Carlos I and his family were the victims of an attack by republican activists Alfredo Costa and Manuel Buiça. The two assassins were killed on the spot by police and bodyguards. The king died immediately, Prince Luís Filipe was mortally wounded, Prince Manuel was struck in the arm, and only the Queen escaped injury. Several days later, after the death of the Prince Royal Luis Filipe, Prince Manuel was proclaimed King of Portugal. He was the last of the Braganza-Saxe-Coburg and Gotha dynasty and the last king of Portugal.
