LUCIEN DUBOIS – WATCH WITH INTEGRAL COMPASS Lucien Dubois, Locle, No. 8001. Made circa 1850. Fine, rare and unusual, 18K gold hunting cased pocket watch with integral compass fitted within the dial. Four-body, bassine et fi lets, engine-turned, reeded band. Hinged gold cuvette. White enamel with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track, subsidiary seconds at 8, compass inset at 4 with points of the compass on the enamel border. Gold Breguet hands. 40 mm., matte gilt, bar caliber, jeweled to the third wheel, lateral lever escapement with counterpoise, bimetallic compensation balance, fl at balance spring, index regulator. Dial, cuvette and movement signed. Diam. 48 mm. Notes Lucien Dubois is likely to be part of the Du Bois et Fils dynasty who specialized in watches with unusual apertures and technical curiosities. The company was established by Philippe Dubois (1738-1808) and became one of the most eminent in the Neuchâtel area for over two centuries.
