English School, 19th century. "Portrait of a Stately Gentleman", oil on wood panel, apparently unsigned. Painting depicts a seated male in gray wig beside an open window revealing two tall ships at sea, the man wearing a blue velvet coat with many buttons, and a green checked vest over a white lace trimmed shirt, seated in a wooden chair with riveted upholstery and a red drape in the background. Label to verso of panel inscribed "Smith * Portrait Painter in Oil * Printfeller & Picture Frame Maker, No 40 Oxford Street, the corner of Newman Street". Overall approximately 14 3/4" x 12 1/2", unframed 10 5/8" x 8 3/8".
