DOUBLE-DIALLED DUAL-TIME TRIPLE DATE CALENDAR WATCH Geneva, made for the French market, circa 1780. Very fine and very rare, astrological, gold, double-dialled pocket watch with two meantime dials and triple date calendar. Two-body, Louis XVI, glazed both sides, the bezels with engraved repeated patterns and applied rope-twist. First : off-center white enamel with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track with Arabic fi ve-minute numerals, inner days of the week indication with their respective corresponding astrological symbols read by a double-ended hand, fi nely painted on enamel border with cherubs and doves on a sky-blue ground, regulation sector below. Second : white enamel with radial Roman numerals, dot minute divisions and Arabic fi ve-minute numerals, inner concentric rings for the date and the months with their respective number of days. Pierced gold fl eur-de-lys and arrow hands. Matte gilt, full plate, fusee and chain with direct drive to both dials, cylinder escapement with brass escape wheel, three-arm brass balance, fl at balance spring, bridge cock with polished steel endplate, calendar work beneath the dials. Diam. 48.5 mm. Notes Lot 283 - This very beautiful watch although unsigned, shows the infl uence of Lepine in its execution. It would have been made for a wealthy and fashionable member of the French aristocracy. The two meantime dials are not independently adjustable but are driven by the same arbour directly from the fusee wheel.
