ARLAUD - SUSANNA AND THE ELDERS Ls Arlaud a Geneve. The case attributed to Frères Huaud, circa 1690, the movement, dial and bezel circa 1730. Fine and rare, gold and painted on enamel pendant watch decorated with a scene of Susanna and the elders. Two-body, bassine, deep back painted on enamel with a scene of Susanna at her bath surprised by two old men, the border painted with landscape vignettes, bezel cast and chased with fl owers and foliage, loose ring pendant, the interior decorated with a painted on enamel landscape. White enamel with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track with fi ve-minute Arabic numerals. Pierced hands. 33 mm, frosted gilt full plate with baluster pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement, plain brass balance with fl at balance spring, fi nely pierced and engraved continental cock, faceted red endstone, silver regulation disc, repeating work now redundant. Movement signed. Diam. 45.5 mm. Notes The later movement of this watch has a quarter-repeating mechanism, the repeating cannot however be activated. Susanna and The Elders The story is set in Babylon, and tells how Susanna, the wife of a prosperous Jew, was secretly desired by two elders of the community who plotted to seduce her. She was accustomed to go into her garden to bathe and one day the two elders hid themselves and as soon as her maids had gone they sprang out naked on the unsuspecting girl. They threatened that unless she gave herself to them they would swear she had committed
