Late 19th/ early 20th century. "British Merchant Navy Maritime Scene", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Painting depicts two tall ships in the near foreground, one of which flies the Red Ensign flag which designates this ship as being of the British Merchant Seamen or Navy fleet, both ships having sailors working on deck and at the top of the masts. A small sailboat is in view between the boats and holds a single figure, with two more small sailboats in the distance. A castle rises up on the shore in the background, possibly Dover Castle in Kent, with a lighthouse to its right. Framed approximately 29 3/8" x 41 5/8", unframed approximately 24" x 36 1/8".
