JERRY GARCIA, THE GRATEFUL DEAD, SAN FRANCISCO, 1969 LINER NOTES Jerry Garcia, on the other hand, was as outgoing as could be; he was having a great time. You can see from the pictures he enjoyed the experience. What subsequently turned out to be the most intriguing moment, however, came when Jerry smiled and held up his open right hand, and I shot the picture I now call "Jerry Waving". I didn't think anything of it when I clicked the shutter but when I printed it I kept trying to do with my finger what he had apparently done with his finger; I thought he had just been fooling around, bending his finger backwards or forwards or something, but I couldn't make it happen on my hand. It was a long time before I learned that his brother had actually chopped off a piece of his finger when they both were quite young. Jerry usually kept that missing digit out of sight. Most people, even his fans, didn't know about it and here he was, holding it up for the world to see and for me to photograph. I remember that moment as another photographic gift, this time from Jerry Garcia to me. - Baron Wolman SPECIFICS Hasselblad and Tri-X film SIZE 16" x 20" MEDIUM Silver gelatin print.
