ELTON JOHN, LONDON, 1970 With a Gentleman of the Road, Soho Square LINER NOTES Dick James Music asked me if I would take some pictures of a singer/piano player chap they had, so I said okay send him round to my studio. Next day this chap called Elton John turns up at my door. He didn't exactly look at all like a pop star; he seemed just another ordinary guy, very quiet and a bit shy. I asked him what he did and he said he'd been the piano player with Long John Baldry and lastly in a band called Bluesology. We did a few rolls of film in my studio but it seemed Elton wasn't 'coming alive' in the shots so I suggested a walk around Soho Square to try to loosen him up and get him more relaxed. At the end of the shoot Elton sat down on a park bench next to a 'Gentleman of the Road' who was eating his sandwich for lunch. It was the best picture of the entire shoot.
