L'AMOUR AU REPOS BRONZE & ORMOLU MANTEL CLOCK French, movement No. 1426. Made circa 1830. Very fine, Charles X, patinated bronze and gilt-bronze, 8-day going, hour and half-hour striking mantel clock. Rectangular, cast with naturalistic rockwork, gilt-bronze swan mount below the dial, surmounted by the gilt-bronze figure of winged cupid seated within a scallop shell on the back of a dolphin, gilt-bronze base on a plinth with gilt- bronze block feet. White enamel with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track. Blued steel Breguet hands. Circular brass plates, going barrels for both trains, anchor escapement, silk suspension, outside countwheel striking on a bell. Notes DIM. 51 x 23 x 16 cm. The case of the present clock is finely cast and chased in contrasting patinated and gilt bronze. Cupid is the companion of Venus who was born from a shell. This clock represents the shell from the birth of Venus and Cupid rests on the shell carried by a dolphin and awaits the return of Venus.
