ROLEX REF 6202 "MONOMETER" STEEL Rolex, "Monometer Oyster Perpetual Officially Certified Chronometer", case No. 949738, Ref. 6202. Made in 1953. Very fine and rare, center seconds, self-winding, water resistant, stainless steel wristwatch with a Rolex stainless steel Jubilee bracelet with deployant clasp. Three-body, polished, curved lugs, screwed-down case back and crown, black bezel embossed with Arabic numerals. Matte black with luminous round, triangular and baton indexes, outer minutes/seconds track. Luminous steel skeleton hands. Cal. 620, rhodium-plated, 2 jewels, straight line-lever escapement, monometallic balance, shock absorber, self-compensating Breguet balance spring. Notes Dial, case and movement signed. DIAM. 36 mm. THICKNESS 13 mm. Approx. overall length: 170 mm. The rarity of the 6202 Monometer has never been questioned by collectors. Only five examples have appeared in the last 20 years on the market and are found with either honeycomb or regular dials (such as this example). Known as the earliest Submariner despite not carrying that name yet, Rolex was obviously still experimenting with the right name, cased in the 6202 Turnograph case. Reasons for the name Monometer are still not clear but it obviously sounds very scientific just like an instrument used to measure depths. Still equipped with its original bezel, a rare opportunity to complete one's early Submariner collection.
