Japanese, Late Meiji Period (1868-1912). Black lacquered scroll box of rectangular form with handle at top decorated with flowering prunus tree with two flying cranes, sides with cherry blossom tree behind striped fence line with perched and flying small birds. Brass engraved strapwork connecting hinged door at front with similar flowering tree and fence ornament. Door opens to reveal three pull out drawers in interior for housing objects, likely scrolls or writing utensils. Storage box or kodansu decorated using a variety of lacquerware techniques including heidatsu, hiramakie, nashiji and takamakie. Unmarked. Approximate height 8.5", width 7", depth 13.125".
