Francois-Arsene Margaine, No. 9888, circa 1890. Very fine and rare solid silver gilt Petite Sonnerie, quarter repeating carriage clock. One piece "Louis XVI", glazed three faces and top, fully chased with foliage, flowers, musical trophies quivers and ribbon knots, standing on four paws. White enamel with Roman numerals and outer Arabic minute ring. Gilt brass dial plate overlaid with a very fine open-work decoration of engraved flowers and foliage. Blued steel hands. Brass rectangular with going barrels both on the going and the striking trains, silvered platform lateral lever escapement, bimetallic balance, blued steel Breguet balance spring. Striking and repeating on gongs with button on the top and Strike/Silent lever in the base. Margaine trademark on the back plate. Dim. 17 x 11 x 9 cm., excluding the handle. Notes The solid silver case of this carriage clock, made by one of the finest French makers, carries the French importation mark. It is very much in the style of Cartier or Carl Faberge, towards the end of the 19th century, and was certainly produced for the Russian or the South American Market.
