Romeo & Juliet Bovet, Fleurier, made for the Chinese market, circa 1830. Very fine and rare 18K gold and enamel, pearl-set watch with ruby duplex escapement. Three-body, “Empire”, solid, back cover with a finely painted on enamel scene depicting a young man embracing a young lady with another standing behind, perhaps a scene from Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, band in translucent scarlet enamel set with half pearls forming flowers, pearl-set bezels on blue enamel ground, gold engine-turned cuvette hinged to the movement adapter ring, pearl-set pendant and bow decorated en suite in blue and scarlet enamels. White enamel, radial Roman numerals, outer minute ring, subsidiary seconds. Gold “spade” hands. 47 mm, unusual gilt brass bridge caliber, fully engraved, standing barrel, ruby duplex escapement, plain five-arm steel balance, flat balance spring, escapement jeweled and capped with diamond balance endstone. Signed on the movement. Diam. 58 mm.
