Le Roy, Palais Royal, 88, Paris, No. 4086, circa 1800.Fine 18K gold, quarter repeating watch. Three-body, Directoire, polished. Hinged gilt brass cuvette. White enamel by Lucard (signed on the enamel backing) with Breguet numerals and outer gilt minutes ring. Blued steel Breguet hands. Gilt brass, typical Lepine calibre with free standing barrel, cylinder escapement, gilt brass three-arm balance, flat balance spring. Repeating on gongs by depressing the pendant with typical Lepine’s repeating train and massive polished steel hammers.Signed on the dial and cuvette.Diam. 64 mm. Notes Although it is fitted with a movement which may have been produced in the workshop of Raguet, the son-in-law and successor of Jean-Antoine Lépine, this watch differs from the watches made by Lépine by its case, which is of a different style, and above all by the fact that the massive polished steel hammers, obviously intended to strike directly on the case as on regular watches made in the workshop of Lépine, are here striking on gongs.
