He was one of the original member of the Sadler'sWells Theatre Ballet (1946-48), and began to choreograph with the Royal Ballet in 1953 (with 'Somnambulism'). Afterdirecting the Berlin Opera (1966-69), he became artistic director of the Royal Ballet (1970), and its principalchoreographer (1977). His works include 'Romeo and Juliet' (1965), 'Manon' (1974), Mayerling (1978), and 'TheJudas Tree' (1992).
