New York Chippendale mahogany balloon seat side chair, ca. 1770 , the shaped crest rail centering on a carved shell flanked by scroll carved volutes, above a pierced splat and a balloon slip seat, supported by cabriole legs, with shell carved knees and ball and claw feet, 39" h. The chair illustrated is No. II of a set of 12 which belonged to General Samuel Blachley Webb of New York and Connecticut, an aide-de-camp to General Washington.
