Notes The Panerai Mare Nostrum watch is a reissue of the timepiece that Panerai designed for the Italian Navy in the 1940's, and was intended for use by Officers aboard ship. Due to the outbreak of the war, this special navy-styled chronograph with luminous dial never entered into production. Panerai offers it now, based on the original design drawings. The dials of the first Panerai watches, in the 1940's, were made with diverse superposed plates fitted with each other: the bottom plate was luminous with "Radiomir" or "Luminor". The dial plate was pierced, so that the numbers were visible through the slots. Panerai very soon noticed that the Radiomir was slightly radioactive, and consequently used Luminor. The numerals, indexes and hands of the present model are made with tritium, which has hardly any radioactive effect.
