Rare Schwenkfelder decorated dower chest with overall vibrant feather grained decoration, the front iwth a black edged cartouche, inscribed "Jacob Hubner 1815" above 2 drawers resting on ogee bracket feet, 27 1/2" h. , 49" w. An identical chest is pictured in The Flowering of American Folk Art by Lipman, plate 305. As suggested in the book, these chests were very likely decorated by fraktur artists Daniel or David Kriebel. Provenance: Descended from the original Schwenkfelder immigrants to the present owners.
