George Catlin (American, 1796-1872). "Wild Horses, At Play", hand colored lithograph, originally published in 1844 as Plate 3 of "Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio", inscribed within plate below image lower left "Catlin del. on stone by McGahey", lower right "Day & Hague Lithrs to the Queen", and lower center "No.3 Wild Horses at Play". Lithograph depicting many wild horses running about and bucking in a wide grassy meadow with a mountain at center to background. Framed approximately 25" x 30", sight size approximately 14.5" x 20.25".Note: George Catlin is widely regarded as being the first person to observe and document Plains Indians in their natural territory during his travels to the American West in the mid 19th century. In 1845, after many years of painting Native Americans on journeys up the Mississippi River and to the Western United States, he published a 25 plate folio entitled "Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio" from which this lithograph originates.
