John Shaw, Holborne, London, circa 1700, made for the Dutch market. Fine and unusual silver pair-cased watch with mock pendulum. Both two-body, "bassine", polished. Silver, champlevé radial Roman numerals, outer minute ring with five-minute Arabic markers on polished oval cartouches, the center chased with exotic birds and cartouche. Blued steel "beetle and poker" hands. 41 mm, gilt full plate with unusual pierced pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement, plain steel balance with flat balance spring, single-footed cock with streamers and straight foot with cut half-circle for the mock pendulum.Signed on dial and movement.Diam. 57 mm. Notes The watch, which has a rack and pinion regulator typical for the period, has a curious text engraved on the solid part of the cock "To increase the Figure will Make it go Faster and Decrease it Slower".
