Virgilia and Volumnia pleading to CoriolanusUnsigned, Geneva, repoussé by Mauris, circa 1740. Fine and rare silver pair-cased watch, with painted enamel panel on the movement, false pendulumand date, made for the Dutch market. Outer: two-body, back repoussé with Virgilia and Volumnia pleading to Coriolanus. Inner: two-body, "bassine", polished. Notes According to Plutarch, Coriolanus, a Roman general, who had been banished from Rome in 491 B.C., went over to the Volsci, enemies of his people. Put in charge of their army, he organized a campaign against his native land, where he was met by his wife and his mother who pleaded with him to call off the attack. On his return the Volsci put him to death as a traitor. The story came to symbolize the strength of family ties.
