F. Engiu, London, No. 1003, circa 1760.Very fine and rare, gold inlaid, bloodstone snuff box containing a watch, in later fitted box. Octagonal, three-body in form of an ink container, overlaid with gold repoussée scrollwork forming an alcove with flower garlands, the hinged center reveals the snuff compartment, opening the hinged domed top reveals the watch. 30 mm., frosted gilt full-plate with square baluster pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement, brass balance with flat balance spring,single-footed cock.Signed on the movement.Dim. Height 60 mm, diameter 55 mm. Notes Baillie lists Fre. Engui, apparently found on a watch hallmarked 1762. This must be a misspelling, because it is no doubt the same maker, on this watch the name is clearly spelled as above. Ink containers fitted with watches were popular in England in the middle of the 18th century.
