Hope and Faith Tiffany & Co. , New York, No. 17708, Swiss-made, circa 1890. Very fine 18K gold keyless minute-repeating watch with chronograph. Four-body, "bassine" with concealed hinge, polished with engraved coat of arms on the back with motton "Spes et Fides" (Hope and Faith), gold hinged cuvette. White enamel, radial Arabic numerals, outer minute track, outermost chronograph track divided into fifths, five-minute/seconds red Arabic markers, subsidiary sunk seconds. Blued steel "spade" hands. 43 mm., nickel, "fausses côtes" decoration, 35 jewels, straight line calibrated lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balancewith Breguet balance spring, repeating on gongs through activating slide in the band.Signed on dial, case and movement.Diam. 54 mm. Notes The cuvette bears two names, the first one being that of Rufus P. Lincoln, probably a major in the 49th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. It is possible that the watch was given to him by the original owner in gratitude for an act of bravery.
