The Castle. Chapeau, French, circa 1870. Very fine and rare eight day-going hour- and half hour-striking musical painting with clock, echo activated at 12 o'clock, six tunes playing on demand. Gilt wood framed, oil on canvas, dominated by a castle by a river with a clock in its tower, two punts and a paddle steamer on the river, right bank wooded with several small buildings and a road, in the extensive background several small hamlets and castles under mountains and a cloudy sky. White enamel with radial Roman numerals, outer minute markers. Blued steel hands. Notes This is the largest musical painting with a clock that we have seen; it has been preserved in very good condition.
