Leonhart Engelschalck, Friedberg, Germany, circa 1660. Very fine and rare silver pre-balance spring, single-hand lady’s pendant watch. Two-body, "bassine" with curved-in edge, polished, long pendant, pivoted bow. Silver, champlevé radial Roman numerals, inner quarter-hour ring. Blued steel "goose neck" hand. 27 mm, hinged, gilt brass full plate, turned baluster pillars, fusee and gut, 4-wheel train, verge escapement, circular iron foliot, irregular cock secured by a screw, pierced and engraved gilt brass click for the ratchet-wheel mainspring set-up.Signed on the back plate.Diam. 33 mm. Notes Leonhard Engelschalck (or Engelschalk), (c. 1625-1685) Is recorded as having worked in Friedberg. He married on June 16, 1654 and had two sons, Johann Christian, and Johann Georg, both also watchmakers. The father’s work is very rare while the work of the sons can be found in such museums as the National Museum in Munich, the Württembergisches Museum, and others.
